Getting married in Norway

Everything international couples need to know about planning a Norwegian wedding — and how to find vendors you can trust.

Legal requirements

Before you can marry in Norway you must apply to the Norwegian Tax Administration (Skatteetaten) for a certificate of no impediment. Processing usually takes two to three weeks, and the certificate is valid for four months. Both partners must be at least 18 years old, and foreign nationals need valid ID plus documentation of civil status from their home country.

Where to marry

Civil ceremonies are performed free of charge by the district court or the municipality. Church weddings are available through the Church of Norway for members, and humanist ceremonies through Human-Etisk Forbund. Many couples marry outdoors — on a fjord shore, a mountain plateau or a farm — with the legal ceremony held separately.

The best time of year

June through August offers long days, mild weather and, above the Arctic Circle, the midnight sun. This is peak season, so book venues and photographers 12 to 18 months ahead. May and September are quieter and cheaper, while a winter wedding in the north can include northern lights.

What it costs

A typical Norwegian wedding for 80 guests costs between 250 000 and 400 000 NOK. Venue and catering usually account for roughly half of the budget. Photography ranges from 15 000 to 45 000 NOK, and flowers from 10 000 to 35 000 NOK.

Finding vendors
